TS-Mnz – A new monazite age reference material for U-Th-Pb microanalysis
نویسندگان
چکیده
A single megacryst of Neoproterozoic monazite (“TS-Mnz”) was investigated by electron probe microanalysis (EPMA), Raman microspectroscopy, U-Pb dating isotope dilution-thermal ionization mass spectrometry (ID-TIMS), and U-Th-Pb trace element analysis laser ablation inductively coupled plasma (LA-ICPMS). The contains both distinct unaltered domains that are either homogeneous or zoned, altered with secondary inclusions ThSiO4 along fractures. Altered can be easily recognized in backscattered images avoided during microanalysis. ID-TIMS measurements two laboratories revealed slight reverse discordance data provided 207Pb/235U mean dates 908.2 ± 1.5 Ma (95% conf., MSWD = 2.9) 910.42 0.34 (2?, 1.0). Three individual LA-ICPMS sessions yielded 899.8 6.9 0.10), 896.3 6.5 0.18) 901.9 2.0 0.57), 208Pb/232Th 909.2 5.8 0.36), 915.1 11 0.31) 909.9 0.56). lower precision the respect to technique hides discrepancies between as well discordance, which is common for monazite. interpreted related standardization setup analytical techniques; however, minor variance analyzed spots also cannot excluded. Multi-step TIMS and CA-TIMS monazite U–Pb geochronology
Multi-step chemical abrasion thermal ionization mass spectrometry (CA-TIMS) methods were developed for monazite using six samples that vary in composition and age—Amelia, Jefferson County, Burke, Elk Mountain, 554 and Madagascar. To evaluate whether the multi-step CA-TIMS approach reveals complexities in either age or composition that might be masked by single-step analysis, this study presents...
متن کاملEvaluation of Uncertainties in Dating of Monazite by Electron Microprobe
Over the last decades, determination of ages in monazite using Electron Probe Microanalysis (EPMA) has progressed to the point that it is now considered as a routine procedure within several laboratories worldwide [1,2]. Nevertheless, the typical age errors of individual electron probe spots reported in the literature are an order of magnitude larger than attainable by Secondary Ion Mass Spectr...
متن کاملComparative isotopic and chemical geochronometry of monazite, with implications for U-Th-Pb dating by electron microprobe: An example from metamorphic rocks of the eastern Wyoming Craton (U.S.A.)
Polygenetic monazite grains in diverse Precambrian crystalline rocks from the Black Hills, South Dakota, have been analyzed in situ by ion and electron microprobe methods (SHRIMP and EMP), to evaluate the accuracy and precision of EMP ages determined using a new analytical protocol that incorporates improved background acquisition and interference corrections. Parallel evaluations were conducte...
متن کامل(U-Th)/(He-Pb) DOUBLE DATING OF DETRITAL ZIRCONS
Geochronology and thermochronology on detrital material provides unique constraints on sedimentary provenance, depositional ages, and orogenic evolution of source terrains. In this paper we describe a method and case-studies of measurement of both U/Pb and (U-Th)/He ages on single crystals of zircon that improves the robustness of constraints in each of these areas by establishing both formatio...
متن کاملPb diffusion in monazite: A combined RBS/SIMS study
We report measurements of Pb diffusion in both synthetic (CePO4) and natural monazites run under dry, 1-atm conditions. Powdered mixtures of prereacted CePO4 and PbZrO3 were used as the source of Pb diffusant for “in-diffusion” experiments conducted in sealed Pt capsules for durations ranging from a few hours to several weeks. Following the diffusion anneals, Pb concentration profiles were meas...
